June 13, 20247 min read

Summer is here! With longer days and warmer weather, there are endless opportunities for fun and exploration with your kids. Whether you're soaking up the sunshine outdoors or seeking cool comfort indoors, there's always a chance to get creative and learn together. Here at Sugar N Spice, we know the importance of keeping little minds and hands engaged, and what better way to do that than with some fun summer crafts?

Now, we understand that "fun" crafts can sometimes feel overwhelming. You might find yourself wondering where to even begin, or if you have all the fancy supplies needed. Don’t worry! The beauty of these crafts is that they're designed to be easy, accessible, and most importantly, enjoyable for both you and your child.

fun friendship bracelet summer craft

1. Friendship Bracelets: Channel those summer camp vibes with some colorful friendship bracelets! All you need is embroidery floss in various colors and some beads. You can find embroidery floss kits at most craft stores, or even use leftover yarn from other projects. There are tons of online tutorials for different braiding techniques – find a simple one that works for you and your child, and let the creativity flow!

Here are a couple different braiding techniques to get you started:

1. Fishtail Braid: The fishtail braid involves weaving together strands of material in a crisscross pattern, creating a distinctive "V" shape. It's perfect for adding a unique and intricate design to your bracelets.

2. Box Braid: Take your braiding skills to the next level with a box braid! This technique creates a thicker and more textured braid compared to a classic three-strand braid. Imagine weaving the strands in a way that forms a boxy pattern. The result? A bold and eye-catching bracelet that's perfect for those who want to make a statement.

2. Origami Creations: Don't forget the power of paper folding! Origami, the Japanese art of paper folding, offers a fun and creative way to spend a summer day indoors. With just a single sheet of paper, your kids can transform a flat square into dynamic origami plants, animals, shapes, and more. The possibilities are endless, and the best part is, that origami crafts require minimal materials and can be enjoyed by kids of all ages.

Grab some glue, a plain picture frame, and your collection of seashells. Carefully glue the seashells onto the frame in any pattern you like, creating a beautiful seaside design. Let it dry completely before adding your favorite photo. Display your personalized seashell picture frame proudly as a reminder of your beach memories!

fun tie-dye project for kids

4. Tie-Dye Magic: Turn plain white shirts, socks, or pillowcases into multicolored masterpieces with tie-dye! There are pre-made tie-dye kits available at craft stores, or you can use rubber bands and fabric dye (make sure it's safe for kids!). You can use these simple tie-dye patterns and let your kids get creative with it. Once dyed, rinse the fabric according to the dye instructions, and reveal your one-of-a-kind tie-dye creation!

With adult supervision, collect materials such as wooden planks, nails, a hammer, and waterproof paint. Cut the planks into appropriate sizes for the birdhouse walls, floor, and roof. Assemble the pieces together using nails, ensuring there's a small entrance hole for the birds. Once assembled, decorate the birdhouse with waterproof paint in vibrant colors. 11. Popsicle Stick Flower Pots: Popsicle sticks are fantastic for crafting, and flower pots are both practical and decorative. Gather popsicle sticks, paint, glue, and any decorations you like (buttons, beads, etc.). 12. Paper Plate Beach Scenes: Turn paper plates into a miniature beach scene! You can paint the scene directly on the plate or cut the paper plate in half to create a base. Then, paint the bottom half blue for the ocean and green or yellow for the sand. Let your child use construction paper, markers, and other materials to create beach elements like seashells, palm trees, or even a little beach umbrella, then guide them in gluing these creations to the base. This is a fun way to bring the beach vibes indoors, especially on rainy days.

Googly eyes, buttons, and plastic gems are perfect for bringing your design to life – use glue to attach them securely. Begin by layering the bottom of the container with a thin layer of gravel or rocks for drainage, followed by a layer of activated charcoal to keep the terrarium fresh. Add a layer of potting soil and plant your chosen greenery, arranging them creatively within the container. Finally, embellish with decorative rocks or pebbles to complete the look. Place your terrarium in a well-lit area, but away from direct sunlight, and enjoy your own little piece of nature indoors!
